The Coordinators of the upcoming National Community Basketball League (NCBL) has advised that all national players will be returning to represent their respective communities, which would disallow the trading that usually goes on at the Inter-Ward competition.
The Coordinators, Kwame Mentore and Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan, have indicated that they want the League to be as competitive as possible, and as such seasoned players that belong to the areas that are invited must represent their home communities in the tournament.
They specifically handed out some names including Jaime Mayers, who must play for (Bourda),
Stefon Gillis and Rayan Gulllen, who will have to represent Plaisance/Vryheid’s Lust, Rodwell Fortune, Ryan Stephney and Travis Burnett, must play for Mc Doom/Diamond.
In addition, Royston Siland will compete for the Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust community. Randy Richardson will represent the Berbice team with Kurt Elias leading Beterverwagting/Melanie as Shelroy Thomas goes back to his roots to represent his home town, Kwakwani.
In Linden, Akeem Kanhai, Neil Marks and Steve Neils Jr. will play for Central McKenzie while
Shane Webster and Dwayne Roberts represent Wismar. The tournament comprises sixteen teams from Georgetown, East Coast, East Bank, New Amsterdam and Linden.
However, the Coordinators wanted to stress the importance of the senior national players playing for their communities in the event that is aimed at resuscitating local basketball while unearthing new talent. It also seeks to develop the infrastructure within communities.
Cadogan indicated that the NCBL will be a breath of fresh air for basketball in Guyana, and will create the right impetus for players to become more active in the sport. He is of the view that the NCBL is what basketball needs right now to spark its development.
The NCBL will climax with a celebrity basketball weekend that will feature, for the first time in Guyana, NBA players. The celebrity weekend of activities are set to run during the CARICOM holiday weekend June 29 to July 1, but May 19 is the bounce date for the League.
Link-Up Media and Guyenterprise along with GT&T, Gizmos and Gadgets, Churches Chicken, Banks DIH Limited, Giftland Office Max and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports are the main partners of the inaugural NCBL that is expected to be an annual event.
