Even the inclement weather that was present in the Bauxite Mining community of Linden yesterday could not prevent the historic launching of the Guyana Beach Football Association (GBFA) / Powerade Inter-Schools Championship, at the Linden Economic Advancement Programme Head Office.
Present at the occasion were General Co-ordinator Rollin Tappin, Prevention Co-ordinator of Linden Care Foundation Sharma Allicock, Banks DIH Representative Junior Lee and PRO of the championship Mark Bradford along with teachers and students of the eight (8) participating schools.
The schools selected to participate in the championship are New Silver City, Wismar Secondary, Christianburg / Wismar Secondary, Marcia Craig Educational Institute, Harmony Secondary, School of Excellence, Mackenzie High and Linden Foundation Secondary.
Tappin speaking at the occasion gave a synopsis of the rules and guidelines of the tournament informing also that it is open to all students from the selected schools who their respective teachers may feel have the necessary skills and ability to give them the best chance of winning.
In relation to the tournament which runs from May 8-20 for a total of five playing days and will coincide with an international segment that will feature Bago, a Beach Soccer team out of Trinidad and Tobago who will be visiting to take on their Guyana counterparts.
According to Tappin, the whole aim of planning the schools tournament around the same time is to allow the juniors to have a better understanding of how the Beach format of the sport is played and also for them to see some of the better exponents of the game in action in a section of the sport that has been growing at an alarming rate.
“It is almost two years ago when the Guyana Football Federation held its first Beach Football Course in this very room and to see that we are now able to add the schools to this format of the game which I’m almost sure is the first to be held in an organised manner anywhere in Guyana is indeed historic and I want to commend the Federation for displaying the foresight and more importantly Banks DIH for sticking with us since the introduction of Beach football in the community,” Tappin stated.
He disclosed Banks DIH has been in the forefront of support for the game and sports generally, adding that yesterday’s launching was overwhelming testimony to such.
Tappin spoke of the type of players who’re likely to excel in the Beach format, pointing to players with deft skills and acrobatic maneuvers as those ideally suited.
The duration of the game is for 36 minutes divided into three twelve minute periods and will be played on a round robin basis in the preliminary stages, before entering the knockout phase.
The top three teams will be presented with trophies and medals, while the fourth placed team will receive medals only.
Meanwhile, Allicock, whose entity has also been extremely supportive to the sport in his remarks, spoke of the role they intend to play throughout the competition.
“We’ve been offering our support to the GBFA for some time now and when approached, we had no hesitation in getting on board. We’ve decided to not only let the teams play and go away, but to provide an opportunity through the provision of personnel who will be present to clear up all misconception about HIV / Aids and all other social issues that may need clarification,” Allicock informed.
He added that the school that participates meaningfully in the 20 minutes sessions that will follow the completion of every game will be awarded a Plaque.
Play starts at 15:00 hrs each day.
