It is the first time the company will be among the major sponsors of the third edition of the event that will be hosted on Sunday May 20, at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden and features Marian Burnett and other athletes from the Caribbean.
The Managing Director of the franchise, Nazar Mohamed said he is pleased to be associated with the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic III. He noted that there has been steady growth of the event and was happy to have his company associated with such growth.
“I’m always supportive of sports events that show interest in development, especially in Linden, so this is another way of showing that interest. I am convinced that my contribution will help the organisers continue to develop the event in that community,” Mohamed said.
The Managing Director of Mohamed’s Enterprise and the City Mall congratulated the organisers for putting the event together and sustaining it for three years. “I am hoping that we will be able to produce athletes like the Jamaicans some day, which is why I believe events like these are necessary,” the former sportsman himself added.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Colin Boyce thanked Mohamed for the contribution toward the success of the event, stating that it is corporate companies like his with a passion for the development of sports that will continue to thrust athletes forward.
“Without the support from people like you and your company, sports really cannot develop at the rate we would want it to. I want to thank you for taking this opportunity to make a difference, and by extension set a corporate example in Guyana,” Boyce indicated.
Apart from dolling out lucrative cash prizes to clubs and athletes, the President’s/Jefford Track and Field Classic seeks to establish a prominent place for athletics in Guyana. It has continually gained support and recognition for the three years it has been held.
Last year, Aliann Pompey competed at the meet for the first time since becoming an international star. This year, the organisers have added more international athletes to the line-up to continue to push the local athletes to their best performances at arguably Guyana’s fastest track. The event is to be officially launched on May 8 at 11am at Digicel’s Headquarters, Kingston.
