Canada-based Paul Vieira, a member of the Vieira clan that has been involved
in motor racing for over three decades, speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday at the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) said he is hoping to produce some exciting performances on Sunday when the club stages its ‘Race of Champions’ Meet, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The soft spoken Group 4 driver, who usually keeps a low profile even though many of his counterparts have the utmost respect for his rare ability returned to Guyana very early to spearhead the repairs on his Mazda RX7 which suffered major damage during the November Meet.
A very consistent performer over the years, Vieira told this newspaper that he had to rebuild the rear of the car which was badly damaged after being hit during one of the races.
He, however, reported that the repairs are completed and it is now a matter of getting to the track tomorrow to get in some valuable seat time.
“We started the car and the engine sounded perfect, but as you know, getting to the track and doing some real testing is the only sure way of measuring the car’s performance,” Vieira said.
According to him, everything looks fine and he is hoping that it remains the same on race day so that he could give his fans something to shout about.
Vieira informed that the car usually works well and he is predicting a top three finish in the category which he revealed is fully subscribed.
“You always want to do well so I’m going to carry that same positive attitude to the track on Sunday and see if it is good enough for me to dominate.”
He further disclosed the car is much lighter now after having 25 lbs taken off of it and this new development according to him should make it faster and hopefully more competitive, especially against the likes of his brother Mark, Kevin Jeffrey, Vishok Persaud, Keith Evelyn, Sean Ten-Pow, Shawn King and Irfaan Kalamadeen.
He said he expects the category to be very competitive and fans are in for a treat come Sunday.
He extended thanks to his main sponsor Ansa McAl through its Carib Beer product.
Meanwhile, two novices’ races have been added to the day’s card and this division is also anticipated to produce some frenzied driving as the drivers coming out of the rookie category battle each other for supremacy.
