-Ravens host Kevin Lawrence Memorial competition
By Edison Jefford
The much-anticipated Kevin Lawrence Memorial Basketball Extravaganza will renew the Linden versus Georgetown rivalry tonight at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 19:30hrs, bringing together two dynasties that have not collided in the sport in almost two years.
Ravens Basketball Club, which is the last club that Lawrence represented before his unfortunate demise in 2010, will host the event tonight in honour of the former national shooting guard who had died in an accident on his way to neighbouring Suriname.
The night features 24 of the best players from the two most established basketball-playing towns in a colossal showdown for bragging rights. The goal is to nationally celebrate Lawrence’s life at the country’s premier indoor facility after Ravens defeated Pacesetters last year.
Linden comes into the feature game tonight at an advantage after having the opportunity to select its team following the completion of its League last week. Conversely, Georgetown’s players are now getting into stride with less than a quarter of their League completed.
Senior national players Marvin Hartman and Steve Neils Jr. were both named from Kings to be a part of the Linden unit along with Coach, Abdulla Hamid. Sharp-shooters, Orin Rose and Chris Williams are also in the team for the Mining Town of Linden.
Junior national point guard, Marlon Pollydore was also included. Allister Webster will handle an immeasurable amount of work in the centre position in the absence of Jason Alonzo, who was an indomitable force in helping Kings claim the Linden League.
Kevin ‘Two Feet’ Joseph, who nailed a half-court buzzer-beating jumper the last time he played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall for Albouystown/Charlestown in the Inter-Ward Championship has also been added to the fold along with forward, Trevor Profitt. The other players that were listed for Linden are Quincy Jones, Shane Webster, Keon Cameron, Harold Adams and Orlando Glasgow.
From all indications, Linden has gone for a mixture of experience and youth with lots of options in the forward positions. It seems as though Hamid as Coach will be attempting to bully the City players into submission in what will be considered an important game.
But it will not be an easy task since Georgetown has added national players Ryan Gullen, Akeem Kanhai, Ryan Stephney, Royston Siland and Stephon Gillis to their team. Siland will be a contest on the defensive end for Georgetown. In addition, Georgetown has gone for the ultimate scoring machine guard, Travis Burnett to support Stephney and Gillis.
The other players on Georgetown’s team include Jaime Meyers, Kerwin Blades, Hodyah Stewart and Jason Squires. Pacesetters and National Coach, Robert Cadogan will lead the Garden City in the clash against their Linden nemesis in the massive showdown.
