The trial against the seven women, who reportedly took part in an illegal procession outside the home of Commissioner of Police Henry Greene, continued on Monday last with three police witnesses taking the stand to relate their testimonies before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell.
The women are accused of engaging in the illegal demonstration outside the home of the Commissioner of Police on December 21.
The police alleged that the women did not have permission to carry on any such activity.
Vanessa Belle, Melissa Leacock, Andrea Marks, Evelyn (Eslyn) Jackson, Shondel Hope, Ann Adams and Natasha Ferguson had all pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was first read before Chief Magistrate (ag) Priya Beharry.
Police Constables Dwayne Towler and Clemroy August yesterday both related their evidence –in-chief to the court led by Prosecutor Neville Jeffers along with Corporal Lancelot Bourne.
The three officers testified to allegedly being at the scene of the alleged offence at the time it happened.
They related to the court, their version of what transpired and their corresponding actions.
The men are expected to return to court on April 23 when they will be cross-examined by Defence Lawyer, Basil Williams who is representing the seven women.
The police alleged that the women, around 03:04hrs at Lamaha Springs Georgetown, were seen by police ranks in front of the home of the Commissioner carrying on a procession.
They claimed to have made checks as to ascertain whether the persons were granted permission to carry on as they were.
But after such checks proved that the women did not have permission, the participants were told of the offence and subsequently arrested.
In the women’s defence, Williams had claimed that the persons had not even commenced any acts when they were approached by the police.
The ladies, who he described as outstanding religious women, were going to pray for the soul of Henry Greene.
He claimed that the persons were not congregated or posted outside the top cop’s home; they were only passing through at the time.
The charge against the women however came at the time when the Commissioner had been implicated in an alleged rape allegation.
The embattled police head was accused by a young woman of forcibly having intercourse with her.
According to a police source, it is believed that the women gathered outside of the top cop’s home to protest the issue.
