A six-year-old St. Angela’s Primary School student was yesterday struck by a motor car
while on the Pedestrian Crossing, a few metres away from her school on Thomas Street.
The accident is believed to have occurred sometime after 11:00 hrs.
The child, Anya Crawford of West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was reportedly crossing the road along with another student, when she was hit by the car.
A police source who asked not to be named said that an eyewitness rushed the child to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she was last seen in the Accident and Emergency Unit, receiving treatment.
The driver however, was taken to the Police station for questioning.
Crawford sustained bruises to her skin and had a tooth knocked out during the accident.
Doctors however, were yesterday still trying to ascertain whether the child may have suffered any internal head injuries.
An eyewitness told Crawford’s relatives that two cars had stopped on Thomas Street for the six-year-old and another student, who were both standing on the pedestrian crossing, awaiting their turn to venture across the road.
As the children were proceeding to cross, another car reportedly overtook the two stationary cars and struck the six-year-old.
The eyewitness related that the St. Angela’s student “pitched” on the car front and then rolled under the car.
He added that he had to shout on the driver of the car to stop, since she (driver) had attempted to drive (not knowing the child was under the car).
Yesterday, at the hospital, the family was contemplating how they will “put it over to Crawford’s mother, since her mother is busy preparing for the funeral of her husband who died on Sunday last,” an aunt said.
Yesterday’s incident was one similar to an accident two Wednesdays ago, where an eight-year-old student from Tucville Primary School was struck by a motor cyclist on the pedestrian crossing a few metres away from her school.
