– father on the run
A two-month old baby from Le Ressouvenir, East Coast Demerara, was killed after he was
reportedly struck a blow to the head from his father – a blow that was intended for his mother.
The child, Andy Hunte, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Hospital around 16:58 hours yesterday where he was rushed three hours after he was struck with the metal buckle of a belt.
The father of the child has gone into hiding while the mother, Tarwan Ramgobin, has been detained by the police who are investigating the matter.
Kaieteur News understands that the child’s parents are alcoholics who constantly fight with each other and yesterday was no different.
The mother of the child told this newspaper that she was holding him in her arms, breastfeeding him when her reputed husband became angry and started beating her with his belt.
This was after she begged him for money to buy milk for the baby.
“He buy a bottle ah Banko and start fuh drink. I ask he fuh money fuh buy milk and he say dat I always with dat,” the baby’s mother told this newspaper.
Despite this she too partook in the drinking of the Banko.
“Me nah go lie, me tek one shot.”
She said that as soon as the wine was finished, her husband became enraged, accusing her of having an “outside affair”.
In the height of the ensuing argument, the man pulled off his belt and began beating Ramgobin about her body. One of the blows struck the child in the head, immediately rendering him unconscious.
It was the father who rushed him to the Georgetown hospital where he reportedly gave officials there his version of the events. He reportedly told police at the Georgetown Hospital Outpost that the child was struck in the head by a pot thrown at him by his reputed wife.
However, by the time the police were able to ascertain what really transpired, the man had disappeared from the hospital.
