At least four staffers of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) have reportedly been sanctioned as a result of a bribery probe involving the container of a city’s businessman.
One has been dismissed while three others were demoted and transferred. They were all from the Intelligence and Internal Affairs Department of that state-owned agency.
It will be recalled that early last month, Ray Sukhnandan, a senior manager of the Department reportedly skipped the country after GRA started an investigation into a report that he and number of other staffers asked a city businessman for $4M to release a container of goods.
While GRA has not issued a statement on the matter, Kaieteur News understands that a female official of the Department became upset after she did not receive a fair share of the $4M that was collected and decided to squeal.
Sukhnandan reportedly handed in his resignation via his brother last month, days before he reportedly fled the country.
It is believed that the senior manager did not leave via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) since no records of his departure were found. GRA believes he is in Suriname.
The container was said to contain general merchandise.
It was explained that under GRA systems, containers entering the country are randomly checked and assessed. In cases of businesses that may have questionable declaration history, these containers are flagged.
A GRA official said that officers may have attempted to bypass this flagging by promising to release the container for a fee, in this case $4M from the businessman.
