Two police constables who were recently identified by a Brazilian national as
the men who allegedly stole a quantity of cash from him yesterday pleaded not guilty to the simple larceny charge after appearing before Magistrate Allan Wilson.
Tramain Ross, 21, of Linden and 20-year-old Jermain Bernard of Lot 753, West Minster, West Bank Demerara, were allegedly identified by the victim, Antonio De Brito, who fingered them as the thieves while making the report at the Alberttown Police Station.
The court heard that on March 6th in Georgetown, the duo allegedly stole $46,000 from De Brito. Bernard and Ross were represented by Defense Attorney, Hewley Griffith. The lawyer asked that the men be granted bail in a reasonable amount and told the court that his clients were still serving members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The prosecution did not object to the officers being granted bail and they were placed on $15,000 each.
According to initial reports, Ross who is stationed at the Alberttown Police Station and Bernard, who is attached to the Brickdam Police Station, allegedly stopped the Brazilian national at Cummings and Light Street and ask to see his documents. It is alleged that the foreigner’s documents were in order, but the duo still demanded $10,000 from him.
When the Brazilian took out the money to give the cops, they allegedly snatched the $46,000 out of his hand.
The Brazilian, it is understood, went to the Alberttown Police Station to report the matter but was surprised to see that the same car the perpetrators were driving earlier was parked outside the station. He was even more surprised when he saw the alleged culprits inside the station. The two officers were pointed out as the alleged thieves.
The police have since seized the car that was reportedly transporting the two officers. They will return to Court Two on March 22.
