-father critical after confrontation with relatives of the accused
Three-year-old Christina Heralall is currently nursing a severed instep at the
Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)’s Paediatric ward, after a car bearing the license plate number PGG 3250, drove over her left foot.
The child’s uncle told Kaieteur News that she was standing alongside the road in front of her Lot 2, Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara home, when a driver who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, drove his car over her foot. The family visited Kaieteur News with a piece of bone about an inch long, which was broken off of her injured foot.
The accused reportedly took little Heralall to the West Demerara Regional Hospital to seek medical attention. She was subsequently transferred to GPHC. The police were summoned and took the accused into custody at the Vreed-en-hoop Police Station.
He was later released, but the car remains in police custody pending investigations.
The child’s Uncle, Jewan Sooklall, told Kaieteur News that he is annoyed with the fact that the police allowed the man to walk and did not conduct a breathalyzer test, despite him being evidently drunk.
Meanwhile, the toddler’s father, Chaitram Heralall, is nursing chops to the head, after he was beaten by relatives of the accused driver on Friday last.
Although he was discharged from the West Demerara Regional Hospital yesterday, the man was still unable to speak, and does not move. When Kaieteur News spoke with his family last night, they were preparing to take him back to the hospital, since they were not comfortable with his condition.
This publication was made to understand that the driver’s relatives had gone over to Mr. Heralall to tell him that the accident was his daughter’s fault and that it was a result of her mother’s carelessness that she was injured.
However, the child’s uncle, Jewan Sooklall, claimed that he and his niece were both standing alongside the road, and that the child was not running about as claimed by the driver.
An argument ensued and a scuffle began between Heralall and the driver’s relatives.
This resulted in Heralall suffering blows to the head, for which he had multiple stitches and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
One of the relatives who attacked Heralall was taken into custody at the Leonora Police Station. He has since been released on bail.
As Mr. Heralall struggles to survive, his daughter remains admitted to GPHC. The girl’s uncle revealed that she might never be able to dance, or do many of the activities children her age does.
The family explained that Christina might have to remain in the hospital for at least the next two months.
