A customary presentation was conducted yesterday afternoon to Kennard’s
Memorial Phagwah Race Meeting which amounted to $5.5 million by sponsor DDL under the Ivanoff Brand. The meet is slated for Sunday at the Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne, Berbice racetrack.
Brands Manager of Wines and Spirits of DDL, Maria Munroe, presented Justice Cecil Kennard with the sponsored trophy at the DDL Head Office, High Street, Kingston; this year has marked the 40th year of DDL collaborating with the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club.
In his brief remarks, Justice Kennard stated that sponsorship is necessary for success of any meet and was sincerely thankful for the Ivanoff Brand of DDL sponsoring the Phagwah Meet. He also stated that condition of the turf in Corentyne is very good since the track has dried out considerably.
In response, Munroe who revealed that Guyana’s number one locally-produced Vodka, Ivanoff as the sponsor of the meet, said that DDL was pleased with partnering once again with Kennard’s Race Meetings for 2012 and stated the Phagwah Meet would mark the first of many exciting programmes that Ivanoff has planned for the year.
The Brands Manager further stated that DDL continues to support the development of sports in Guyana and would be committed in supporting all four of the planned race meetings of Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club for 2012.
In closing she implored all Ivanoff Vodka drinkers to drink responsibly.
The meet which is organised by Justice Kennard will see over 60 horses competing in eight different Classes.
The feature race will be the Jumbo Jet’s B & Lower event, which comprise of a distance 7 furlongs with the first prize of $1,000,000. The other 7 furlongs distance races are 3Years (GUY&W.I), winner of this race walks out the turf with $400,000; E & Lower W/A ($500,000) and G1 & Lower W/A ($300,000).
DDL’s H1 & Lower W/A 6 furlongs will see contestants racing for $220,000, while the 6 furlongs J & Lower W/A and I2 & Lower W/A first prizes will be $120,000 and $160,000 respectively. Winner of the first race of the day, L W/A will earn $100,000.
Owners of horses must pay at least $3,000 for each horse at the time of entry; if not paid the horses’ names would not appear on the Official Programme.
