-Fruta Conquerors claims third place
By Rawle Welch
In front of a large crowd that included Opposition Leader Retired Brigadier David Granger, member of Parliament Joe Harmon, and top executives of Gold sponsor NaMilCo, Guyana Defence Force’s star striker Desford Williams engineered a crushing 4-0 conquest over Beacons in the final of this year’s NaMilCo Football Festival which ended on Sunday evening, at the Tucville ground.
Williams was in superb form, lashing in a hat-trick in the 9th, 28th and 57th minutes, while Stephen Dolphin completed their tally with a goal of his own in the 68th minute of play.
In the playoff for third place, hosts Fruta Conquerors ran riot over a hapless and depleted Sunburst Camptown unit, hammering them 7-0 to gain some solace after a disappointing semi-final loss to the Army.
Jahal Greaves netted the first hat-trick of the night, scoring in the 15th, 25th and 67th minutes and he was supported by a brace from Dwayne Lawrence, who netted in the 17th and 51st minutes, while Fernando Olivera’s 68th minute strike and Colin Edwards’ 70th minute effort rounded out a solid performance for the Tucville-based team.
A packed house saw Beacons, who made it to the final largely due to the withdrawal of defending champions Alpha United were completely outclassed by a fitter and clearly technical superior GDF side which controlled over 70% of the possession with the nippy Delwyn Fraser playing on the right side and Williams on the opposite flank creating havoc for the Beacons backline with their speed and skill and it was just a matter of time before they took the lead.
Williams gave the Army the lead when he reached on to a pass from the right flank that was squared into the middle and in one sweeping motion hammered a powerful shot past the Beacons custodian.
Bouyed by their early success, the soldiers continued their attack on the opposition’s defence and it was Williams, who added the second goal to stretch their advantage with a beauty.
Collecting a pass on the left side, he dribbled one defender, before curling a wonderful strike into the roof of the nets.
It was a stunning result from a neat build up and they went to the break with a 2-0 lead.
The resumption brought no respite for Beacons with ball possession being dominated by the men in green and 12 minutes into the second period, Williams completed his work on the scoresheet, netting his third, while to add icing on the cake, Dolphin got into the act to complete the rout and end a sorrowful display by Beacons who took home $500,000.
In the opening encounter, pre-tournament favourites Fruta Conquerors ensured that they took a reasonable slice of the prize money with an inspiring performance against an evidently weakened Sunburst Camptown team that was missing most of their marquee players.
Conquerors received a cheque for $200,000, while Camptown collected $100,000.
During the presentation ceremony which had in attendance Brig. Granger, who assisted in the distribution of prizes, Williams and Greaves were voted joint top goalscorers with 4 goals apiece, while the Most Valuable Player award went to the Army’s Delwyn Fraser.
The Army’s dominance in the tournament was so noticeable that they copped the Best Goalkeeper award which went to Delon Young.
Tow young players will also benefit from a complete package to learn computer training compliments of Global Technology.
The Organisers extended thanks to the other sponsors such as NaMilCo, 2J’s General Store, Star Party Rentals, Bayridge Taxi Service, Banks DIH, Guyana Beverage Inc. Junior’s Jewellery and Prudential Technology Inc.
