Wins were recorded by CBR Mining Milerock, who blasted their opponents
and fellow Linden side Winners’ Connection 5-1, while Bakewell Topp XX overcame a tough challenge from Amelia’s Ward United 4-3 in extra time when rivalry in the Thomas United Anniversary football championship resumed at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden on Tuesday night.
Topp XX, the most successful team in Guyana’s premier KO tournament, Kashif & Shanghai, took the lead in the 10th minute following a Marlon Cox strike. But they were surprised by a double after two well taken free kicks that rocked the nets by one of the best in the business, Travis Waterton in the 19th and 36th minute.
The scores were then tied again when Topp XX’s Colwyn David struck the target in the 40th minute only to see Shawn Daniels restored the advantage in the 64th minute for Amelia’s Ward. The drama continued for the players and fans when David again drew Topp XX on even keel with the equaliser one minute later.
When full time expired, the scores was locked 3-3. In the resultant period of extra time, Keon Sears buried a penalty shot for Topp XX in the 118th minute after the ball was handled by an Amelia’s Ward defender. The dagger like penalty secured the win for Topp XX and their place in the next round.
In the first game of the night, Milerock, the leading side in the Bauxite Mining Town showed their class by brushing aside Winners Connection 5-1. Junior national Ryan Crandon opened the scoring for Milerock in the 3rd minute, Jermaine McBean doubling the advantage six minutes later.
Carl David reduced the advantage for Winners Connection in the 29th minute but Milerock. A doubles by Trevor Tudor in the 64th and 66th virtually put the game beyond the reach of Winners Connection with Ron Fiedtkou putting the icing on the cake with a goal of his own four minutes to full time, the final score, Milerock 5 Winners Connection 1.
