Berbicians can boast of having two Mashramani celebrations in one week.
Following on the heels of the celebrations organised by the New Amsterdam Mashramani Committee on Thursday, February 23, the National Mashramani Committee under the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and the Regional Administration of Region 6 yesterday held their version of the Mashramani celebrations.
There was not much to shout about as only seven bands took part in the street parade, which got started around 14:00 hrs at the usual spot at Tacama Turn or Alphonso Square at Islington . Groups that participated included beverage giants Banks DIH Limited, Demerara Distilleries Limited and AnsaMcAl; the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs along with the Regional Administration of Region Six.
Among those absent were telephone giants Digicel and GT&T. Many Berbicians including Minister of Agriculture were not happy that they were snubbed by the telephone giants and condemned their absence. They were not happy that the telephone companies chose to bypass the celebrations in Berbice although both companies would usually boast about the good business that they would conduct in the Ancient County.
But while noting the absence of the two companies, many said that they were having fun anyway. Thousands of revelers however came out on the road to jump and dance, drink and ‘misbehave’ and have a nice time, which others criticized as not having much significance of Mashramani celebrations and labeled it a big ‘street party’. These critics said that Mashramani has lost its significance.
The police for their part did not put up any barriers, thus making the situation more chaotic as vehicles and the massive crowd all jostled for the use of the road way.
