Feb 22, 2012 Letters
DEAR EDITOR,
I was astonished to read in your Monday 20th February edition that a heavy duty bridge constructed at Sisters Village had collapsed.
To the best of my knowledge this bridge was standing perfectly as recent as Thursday the 16th of February, on which day I made an inspection following rumours that the structure had collapsed.
At that visit I found that due to the negligence of the NDC and heavy rainfall, huge islands of floating vegetation had accumulated on the pillars of the bridge to the extent that it has completely cut off the flow of water in the canal beneath the structure.
Therefore water will find a flow path and it did, as seen the water began to cut a channel very close the revetments of the structure. Had this situation been left to continue there could have been severe erosion close to the north abutment, however I dispatch my excavator on seeing this, free of cost I might add, and cleared the blockage and restored the flow path of water under the structure.
The following should be noted:
The structure was completed since October 2011.
My 15-tonne excavator can stand and work on the structure without any failure as seen in the picture above.
I am amazed to read that the structure has collapsed.
This structure was slated to be visited by the State Auditors on Monday 20th February, 2012, as part of their annual physical verification programme and I have no fear that anything is out of place or inappropriate.
As such I am kindly asking for your agency to kindly print the facts just as fast as you have printed the rumours and I suggest that you verify information you receive or contact all parties involved before your agency commences its activities of degradation of persons’ reputations.
As far as I can see, that councilor has a concern about the old materials that have been removed from the bridge and handed over to the NDC for disposal, since I fail to see how that fits into the concern of the bridge collapsing.
