Trade with Brazil tops US$35M last year
Trade between Guyana and Brazil last year was a heartening US$35M
($7B), reflecting a 26% increase over 2010.
The reason is mainly due to the commissioning of the Takutu Bridge, which links Guyana and Brazil.
According to the Prensa Latina online news, in 2002 trade was a measly US$780,000. This has grown as more Brazilians settled in Guyana, becoming involved in the mining and entertainment sectors.
Lethem, a border area in Region Nine, has grown, with hundreds of cars reportedly crossing the bridge weekly.
Flour and a number of food items are now making its way from Guyana to Brazil.
Foreign Ministers of Brazil, Antonio Patriota, and Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett were expected to meet yesterday to discuss issues of bilateral interest, with emphasis on projects of infrastructure and technical and border cooperation.
The meeting according to Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, is expected to take place in the capital’s Itamaraty Palace
