The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association will be placing emphasis on the development of women’s boxing this year.
GABA president Steve Ninvalle informed that the association’s Technical Director, Terrence Poole, has been placed in charge of “reawakening” the female department of the sport which is in dire need of a shot in the arm.
“We can’t stick our heads in the sand. There is a problem with attracting young women to the sport and we need to rectify that. At this point in time I would say that amateur boxing only has a handful of females. We need to turn that around,” Ninvalle stated.
The GABA boss further disclosed that he has been in discussion with personnel at the Ministry of Sport to help remedy the situation. “We are trying to see if we can reintroduce the sport at the New Opportunity Corp in Essequibo. I have spoken to Mr. Ramdatt, our Assistant Director of Youth and he is enthused.”
According to Ninvalle, the association will also embark on a public awareness campaign that will educate persons on safety measures introduced in amateur boxing and the discipline that can be derived.
“Many people still view boxing on the whole as a barbaric sport since the most convincing way to secure victory is to deliver knockouts which makes it difficult , physically, for ones opponent to continue. However, in amateur boxing there are safety measures,” Ninvalle informed.
Women’s amateur boxing has grown worldwide, and for the first time will be competed in at an Olympics when the XXX Olympiad is hosted in London later this year.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle disclosed that Vanessa Robinson is ranked 27th in the 57 KG category according to the latest AIBA Ratings, while compatriot Ansilla Norville is ranked 33rd in the 51 KG category. Both fighters attended the AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championship held in Barbados in September 2010.
