Morgan, Barker, Melville & Shewdas are tops; AGM set for same date
Following another successful year on the local, regional and international scene, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) will reward their outstanding athletes who have done well for themselves and country.
The accomplishments of top male strongman Randolph ‘The Accomplisher’ Morgan and leading strongwoman Dawn ‘The Cool Destroyer’ Barker will be recognised by the GAPF when they are rewarded as the best in the business in the Land of Many Waters.
Morgan, a 3-time Caribbean champion and Best Lifter was unbeatable on the local scene again last year and will be headlining Guyana’s challenge at the 6th IPF/NAPF Caribbean Powerlifting Championships set for the United States Virgin Islands, March 28th – April 1, 2012.
He is ranked at 21st out of 164 athletes rated by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) in the 83kg division and was in destructive mode at the last Caribbean championships when storming into the record books following a clean sweep of the opposition with records in the squat, bench press, dead lift and total (overall).
Barker, who competes in the 84+kg class, has been phenomenal at all the meets she has attended in 2011 so much so that she powered her way into the Commonwealth record books (5th) place becoming the first Guyanese female to achieve such a feat.
Barker was also unbeatable in the Caribbean and North America and holds the Caribbean and Commonwealth Squat Record in her category having attained 227.5kgs/501.63lbs at the 5th Caribbean Championships held in the Cayman Islands in March, 2011.
At these championships, the Linden based Teacher, also set new records squat, dead lift and total (overall).
The top male junior is Kenneth Melville (105kg Men’s junior category) who also apart from his local exploits achieved a similar feat like Morgan when he set records at the last Caribbean Championships in all four segments of his category; squat, bench press, dead lift and total (overall).
Adjudged as the top male sub-junior was Gumendra Shewdas, who competes in the 53kg division.
All four athletes are part of the Guyana team for the Caribbean Championships.
The Awards ceremony will be held on February 6th following the conclusion of the GAPF’s Annual General Meeting.
