The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment intends to vigorously defend the rights of the country’s indigenous people in light of reports of unwanted mining and other means of trespassing in Amerindian villages, particularly at Isseneru.
The Ministry was referring to a recent incident where the Akawaio Amerindians from Isseneru village, Region Seven, were being violated by a defiant miner who boldly flouted orders by the authorities to cease mining on indigenous land.
Kaieteur News understands that the Village Council had not given permission for the said miner to extract gold from an area within the Amerindian titled and demarcated land.
In fact, the head of the village, Dhanessl Larson, had declared that other villagers were being prevented by the miner from even having access to their lands where the mining is actually taking place.
In an effort to get justice, Larson and other members of his Village Council, traveled to Georgetown sometime after the incident to vent their frustration, saying that despite their repeated efforts, the miner had refused to comply with their request.
They have been calling on the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to shut down his operation.
The aggrieved Amerindians were of the impression that they were being treated unjustly since they are ‘Amerindians’, and as such, had called upon the Government and the GGMC to enforce laws and rules which will help to protect them.
In response to the call, and in an effort to address this situation and the wider issues of mining in Amerindian Titled lands, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, GGMC, along with the Isseneru Village Council, met to discuss the way forward.
The Natural Resources Ministry said that they will continue to closely monitor this and every other situation where Amerindians are being treated unfairly.
