– Contractors pursue continuous maintenance
Repair works along certain sections of the Linden to Lethem Road are being threatened by heavy rainfall in the hinterland Region, says Naeem Mohamed, Hinterland Engineer, Public Works Ministry.
According to Mohamed, certain sections along the stretch that were repaired after the May- July heavy rainfall are once again being threatened by scattered heavy rainfall.
One of the areas seriously affected is 20 Miles before Kurupukari in the Iwokarama Forest. Ongoing repairs by BK International in that area are also being disrupted.
He emphasised that contractors on the stretch have been carrying out maintenance works to ensure that the road does not return to its previous deplorable condition with huge holes and slushiness, rendering some vehicles impassible.
In early May, the Ministry awarded contracts to BK International and Mekdeci Machinery Company (MMC) for the execution of rehabilitation and maintenance works on 265 miles of the Linden to Lethem roadway.
Mohamed stated that repairs from Linden to Kurupukari are 80 percent completed while works in Region Nine are 70 percent finished. He said that 135 miles of roadway have been graded, compacted, and overlaid with laterite.
Last month, the Ministry awarded a $28M contract to Dalip Construction to carry out road repairs from Lethem to Katunarib, Region Nine. The works involve excavating material to build roads, and overlaying the 55 Miles of roadway with laterite. About 30 percent of construction works have been completed.
He said that the travel time from Lethem to Georgetown has been reduced from 16 hours to 11 hours. Nonetheless, drivers are still asked to traverse at moderate speeds and to avoid overloading cargo trucks.
