The Private Sector Commission (PSC) is condemning any attempt by any political party and its supporters to resort to unlawful public protest aimed at creating an environment of public fear and the destabilization of the country.
This was declared at the Private Sector Commission Boardroom yesterday, in the presence of US Ambassador Brent Hardt, British High Commission Andrew Ayre, Canadian High Commissioner David Devine, and European Union Resident Representative, Robert Kopecky were present.
Chairman of the PSC, Ramesh Dookhoo, said that the commission has accepted the results of GECOM and urges immediate national acceptance of these results.
He said that the commission wishes to remind all of the political parties and their supporters that irrevocable harm will be done to the country’s economy and its financial stability by any refusal on the part of any one of the contesting political parties to accept these results.
“The people have spoken through a democratic process endorsed by all of the international observers. It is time now that the country returns to normalcy and gets on with the business of giving expression, through the duly elected Government and the National Assembly, to the will of the people,” Dookhoo said.
He said that the business community has been suffering tremendously. It is losing money in the current atmosphere of insecurity.
Heads of the Diplomatic Missions of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and the European Union deemed the elections free and fair. They noted that the opposition-controlled parliament is a historic change in the political landscape.
“It is critical at this important moment in Guyana’s history that all Guyanese, regardless of party affiliation, join together and work toward the higher principle of stable, effective, and transparent democratic governance,” Ambassador of the United States Embassy, Brent Hardt noted.
His fellow diplomats High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana, David Devine, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom Andrew Ayre and New EU ambassador to Guyana Robert Kopecky collectively agreed that adherence to democratic principles involves respect for the rule of law and the maintenance of peace, order and security.
“It is our fervent hope that all Guyanese respect the democratic outcome, as expressed by the people of Guyana through their votes in the recent elections. This outcome offers an historic opportunity for the people of Guyana to come together and work across party lines to advance the interests of all people in Guyana.”
The Heads of the Diplomatic Missions noted, “Our countries look forward to working closely with the newly elected government and with all parties in parliament to support unified national efforts to build a prosperous, secure, and democratic Guyana.”
The incumbent PPP/C had won 32 seats; A Partnership For National Unity (APNU) 26 seats, while the Alliance For Change (AFC) gained seven seats at the recent elections.
