Police are yet to identify the body of a woman believed to be a destitute that was found in the Bedford Manse churchyard, at Camp and North Road, on Wednesday.
Up to press time no relative had gone to the Lyken Funeral Home to identify the body.
The body, according to sources, had a gaping wound to the head and several stab wounds about the body. She was of mixed race.
The body was discovered by neighbours who later called in the police.
Kaieteur News was told that the police recovered a pair of slippers from about 30 feet away from the body.
A neighbour was taken to the station to give a statement after he told the police that he heard a woman screaming about a night ago.
Police sources said that the man said that he was watching cricket when he heard the scream.
The man said that he looked through his window and saw a “tall slim” guy jumping the church fence.
The police are still investigating the matter.
