-GTTA President reveals at Schools C/ships Presentation
By Edison Jefford
President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene believes that the just-concluded Schools’ Championships served its primary purposes, which were to decentralise the sport and identify new talents.
Greene made the observation yesterday at the Police Officers’ Mess where the GTTA hosted a Presentation Ceremony for the top performers in the nationwide competition. He lauded major sponsors, Digicel, for supporting the association in achieving its goals.
“We have certainly seen and identified new talents in table tennis. I am extremely impressed with the amount of young people playing table tennis. As you know, our drive has been to spread table tennis-to have people throughout the country playing the game,” Greene said.
The 2011 tournament attracted over 150 players from over twenty Secondary Schools and four Primary Schools with 300 matches played at the Queens College Auditorium over the past two weeks. It represented a growth in the tournament from last year.
“This year, Digicel has diversified their support. We hope to have their support again next year; they have started the tournament and we hope they continue with us. I hope that all of you who played in this tournament are ready for the bigger tournament in two weeks,” Greene continued, alluding to the upcoming National Junior and Senior Championships next month.
He encouraged the up-and-coming players with the fact that there now young age-group categories on the global stage. According to Greene, the players could develop themselves enough to become young world champions if they take the sport seriously.
“We are satisfied with the results of this tournament. Next year we are going to include the individual categories in the competition. Our programmes for table tennis have been going well and this in itself is a form of encouragement for us,” the GTTA head indicated.
Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, who was also present at the occasion, thanked parents for giving their children the opportunity to compete in the tournament. Kumar said that without the support of parents the turnout at the event would not have been possible.
“Parents, you are doing so much for sport when you support your children. You must not only give them support academically. Once you give them the support, then dynamic leadership will ensure that they maximise their potential,” Kumar posited.
He reiterated the fact that Greene has resuscitated table tennis, indicating that since he has been around the sport, he has never seen so many tournaments in one calendar year. He believes that the “widespread” participation is a positive development for the sport.
The Director of Sport publicly informed the association that he is committed to giving them the land they need for the construction of a state-of-the-art table tennis facility. Greene had long said that the sport needs its own facility to further advance its programmes.
In the presentation, Mae’s ‘A’ collected the top award in the U-10 category with North Georgetown Primary second and Mae’s ‘B’ third. Queens College ‘A’ won the U-13 title with St. Rose’s High second and Mae’s ‘A’ third. New Amsterdam Multi ‘A’ won in the U-15 group with St. Joseph’s High second and Mae’s ‘A’ third.
