With the upcoming elections scheduled for Monday the U.S. Embassy is cautioning all U.S. citizens in Guyana to stay alert. It is common for the US embassy to send alerts to its citizens during elections, wars and civil unrest.
According the US Embassy previous elections have led to incidents of increased criminal activity and violence in Guyana.
The embassy added that in the days before, during, and after the election, “you should monitor local media, avoid congested areas or areas where demonstrations are taking place or have been scheduled, and always travel with a charged cell phone.”
“Use well-traveled, well-lit routes; do not attempt to drive through roadblocks. If your vehicle is stopped for any reason, do not leave the vehicle. If you find yourself in a demonstration, try to leave immediately or find nearby shelter. In all cases, follow the instructions of local law enforcement authorities.”
The embassy added that its citizens should be aware that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.
“You are therefore urged to avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring, and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any demonstrations.
“You should stay current with media coverage of local events and be aware of your surroundings at all times.”
U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Guyana are urged by the embassy to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in order to receive the most up-to-date security information.
“By enrolling, you make it easier for the Embassy to contact you in case of emergency. If you do not have internet access you may enroll directly with the U.S. Embassy. “
