Minister of Finance, Ashni Singh has announced that the recently announced 8% increase in salaries will now be extended to ministers of the Government, members of the National Assembly and constitutional office holders and not only public servants.
These additional persons include the Ombudsman, Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Public Service Commission, every appointed member of the Judicial System as well as the Police Service Commission, among others.
It was on November 3, 2011, that outgoing President Bharrat Jagdeo had approved an 8% (eight percent) across the board increase for public servants just three weeks heading into the elections.
“The 8% increase will be payable to all public servants and members of the disciplined services, while teachers will get a 3% across the board increase with effect from January 1st 2011 on top of the 5% percent increase previously paid by government with effect from the same date pursuant to the multiyear agreement concluded between government and the Guyana Teachers Union,” a government release had stated.
The President had also granted approval for an additional increase of 3% to be paid to employees of the Guyana Sugar Corporation, who were previously paid a 5% increase for 2011.
“This latest decision by the President would bring the total increase paid for 2011 to all these categories of employees to 8 percent. The Government of Guyana has consistently paid increases to public sector employees over recent years, at a time when many other countries in the Caribbean and the rest of the world have imposed wage freezes and cuts in their public sector,” the release had said.
