Moving into uncharted territory, Guyana’s footballers continue to turn heads with the Guyana ‘Red Jaguars’ out of the Mining Town of Linden finishing third in the Second Annual BagoSports Beach Football Invitational Tournament (BSBFIT) in Trinidad and Tobago last weekend.
The BagoSports Limited (a multi-sport company which is designed to develop and promote sports in T&T) sponsored event, which was held at the Turtle Beach Heritage Park in Tobago, saw ten teams participating which included Brent Sancho’s All Star (defending champions), Florida Beach Soccer FC (a professional team of Miami, last year runner up), Iriation Youth of Whim, Untouchables FC (T & T 2011 Guinness Street Football Champs), Black Rock FC of Black Rock, Stokley Vale FC, Pheonix FC, Sagicor Football Team and SW Touring Fred’s Team.
Guyana being the only country in South American to take part in the tournament put up a creditable performance in the group stage winning three games and losing one.
The Red Jaguars pawed SW Touring Fred’s Team by 12 goals to 1 and continued their hunt by mowing down Sagicor Football Team by 12 goals to 4; after which they mauled Black Rock FC by 4 goals to 1.
After winning three consecutive games in the tournament, the Jaguars first lost was to Stokley Vale FC. Guyana registered four goals while Stokley Vale FC claimed 7 goals to defeat their opponents.
At the end of the first round of the tournament, Red Jaguars were positioned second in their group to advance to the quarterfinals for a kick-off with Sancho All Stars. Sancho All Star were clawed 5-4 which allowed the Red Jags to qualify for the semi-finals against Stokley Vale. Guyana only registered three goals against the strongly compact Stokley Vale, who had six.
Florida Beach Soccer FC carted off the 1st prize of USD$10,000 in the finals against Stokley Vale FC winning by 4 goals to 1.
By virtue of Guyana’s outstanding performance in the preliminary rounds under the supervision of Phillip Gibbons who performed the Duties as Manager/Coach, the Red Jaguars were adjudged as the third best team within the competition.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s Red Jaguars participation in the Annual BagoSports Beach Football Invitational Tournament (BSBFIT) in Trinidad and Tobago was made possible by Banks DIH Ltd’s timely contribution.
President of the Guyana Beach Soccer Association, Mr. Garth Nelson, whose brain child this local programme is, accompanied the team to Trinidad & Tobago and he complimented the players for putting up such an outstanding performance for newcomers. He promised to have more competitions in the New Year and to make the local competition more on a national nature with the invitation of teams from Berbice, Georgetown, Lethem, Bartica, East Bank, Essequibo, West Demerara and East Coast.
