Geddes Grant/Seven Seas 2011 National Senior Chess Championships
National Senior Chess Champion Taffin Khan has asserted himself very early and has amassed four impeccable wins from as many games to lead the points standing when the Geddes Grant /Seven Seas 2011 National Senior Chess Championship continued at the Ocean Spray Hotel over the past weekend.
Junior player, Anthony Drayton has registered three wins and a draw and is a mere ½ point behind Khan, while Maria Thomas and Saeed Ali have both amassed two points apiece to share the third place.
Meanwhile, Glenford Corlette scored a major upset victory after defeating Thomas, the lone female participant. Thomas has also conceded a game to Taffin Khan but is expected to continue battling for a podium spot reminiscent of admirable performances after making her debut on the chess scene earlier this year.
Four senior chess players, including defending national champion, Taffin Khan, and a similar number of juniors are vying for the 2011 senior title in a double round robin challenge. There are ten remaining rounds to be played.
Current National Junior Champion Suhai Feng failed to show up for the first three rounds, placing himself at a disadvantage. However, he was able to secure a draw with fellow junior player, Saeed Ali after joining the competition in the fourth round.
The other points standings after four rounds: Rashad Hussain and Frankie Farley (1½ points apiece), Glenford Corlette (one point) while Suhai Feng remains in the cellar on ½ point.
The championship resumes this Saturday, November 26 at the same venue.
