Five packets of a substance suspected to be cocaine were discovered on a Russian cargo ship that is docked at a city wharf.
The discovery was made early yesterday morning, a few hours before the vessel was scheduled to depart Port Georgetown.
No one has been detained and drug agents are testing the substance to verify if indeed it is cocaine.
Police Commissioner Henry Greene yesterday confirmed the find.
He told this newspaper that the vessel, the MV Buzzard Bay, arrived in Port Georgetown from neighbouring Suriname.
Some time early yesterday morning one of the sailors discovered a strange looking parcel and immediately informed a police rank who was on duty at the wharf.
The rank subsequently contacted his colleagues from the Force’s Anti-Narcotics Unit who boarded the vessel and carried out a search.
During the search four more parcels with a similar substance were discovered and taken away for testing.
Commissioner Greene said that the ship’s crew was questioned and an intensive investigation has been launched.
“They look like two pound packets but we are still checking,” the police commissioner stated.
Up to late yesterday, the ship had not left port Georgetown.
