Daniel Ramgadoo, Leroy Layne, Carlos Rahaman and Anel Latchman teamed up to capture the honours for Black Bush Secondary School when the second edition of the Berbice Inter-schools Chess Championship concluded at the Berbice High School, New Amsterdam, Friday November 11 last.
J.C. Chandisingh Secondary regained some glory when Hemchan Narain dominated the individual category with an impeccable four wins from as many games.
Eight schools participated in the team category while four competed for the individual prize. Elizabeth Ramgoolam of Black Bush Secondary copped second place with three wins and Yutesh Dyal of Port Mourant Primary was third with two and a half points. Levi Nedd of Manchester Secondary was fourth with two points.
Forty chess players from ten schools in Berbice took part in the competition. The secondary schools which participated were Black Bush, J.C. Chandisingh, Skeldon Line Path, Corentyne Comprehensive High, Berbice High, Tagore Memorial, Manchester and Canje Secondary. St. Therese’s and Port Mourant Primary were the only two primary schools which participated.
The 2011 Berbice Inter-Schools Chess Championship was staged through a collaborative effort of the Region Six Department of Education, the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and the Guyana Chess Federation. Krishnanand Raghunandan, Secretary of the Chamber coordinated the event.
Trophies were sponsored by Republic Bank, the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam, businessmen Surendra Ganesh, D. Balram Shane and Imran Hamid General Stores of Berbice.
