Bourda Blues take one City zone
Defending East Coast champs Buxton rolled into the National playoffs by winning their zone, comfortably defending their title in the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block 7:15 football tournament at the Buxton ground under lights Saturday.
The Buxton lads, playing in front of a large crowd, turned in a skillful display to dominate Melanie for an easy 5-0 triumph in the championship game. In the semis, Buxton eased by Ann’s Grove by a 1-0 margin, while Melanie overcame Plaisance 2-0.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Sports Ministry, Steve Ninvalle, who brainstormed the Inter-Block grassroots concept, was on hand to meet the teams. He said he was heartened by the crowd present and commended Buxtonians and other East Coast Villagers for coming out in their numbers to support the event.
Ninvalle told the gathering that government stands committed to sports in Guyana and especially at the community level, a programme previously encouraged by Minister of Sports Dr Frank Anthony. Dr Anthony has encouraged community based sports programmes in the aid for a healthier and fitter nation.
In other action, this time in Georgetown at the GFC ground, Bourda Blues won their zone after a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Broad Street. The sides were locked 0-0 after regulation time. In the semifinal action, Bourda Blues won 5-4 again via the penalty route after their contest against Tiger Bay ended 0-0 after regulation time. Broad Street gained a walk over from Kitty.
