Dear Editor,
For me, my most favourite time of the year has been infringed upon by this election season. Christmas jingles, which were supposed to dominate the airwaves, have been replaced by election jingles.
Words of love and good tidings and joy have been replaced by cuss down. Peace and goodwill towards all men have been substituted with rancor and ill will among those vying for power. Christmas brings out the best in people. These days, we see the worst behaviours from our politicians and government leaders. See my point?
This is some Christmas season.
America, the wisest of all nations, holds its elections early November, so that it would not interfere with the year- end holidays such as Thanksgiving, Hannukah and Christmas.
America understands itself and other countries, I am sure, hardly ever holds their elections very near to the year’s end. America announces elections results late on election night. Guyana waits for two days later, perhaps more.
America and other countries move on and get back to business the day after elections. In Guyana, somebody almost never accepts the results and they do nonsense.
Whose wise idea was it to call elections on November 28? That individual has no love for Christmas in their heart.
This is one Christmas Guyanese will never forget, or perhaps remember. Nobody is sure what the post- election days will bring. Those days are usually the days when the economic activities start to pick up. It is rather unfortunate all of this is happening.
It just doesn’t feel like Christmas to me. With Christmas just over a month or so away, it just does not seem as if it will be a normal Christmas.
Damn the politicians! Damn them to hell!
