Several stakeholders turned out at the Guyana National Service Ground on Friday for a Fire Safety and Prevention Seminar. The seminar was facilitated by the Guyana Fire Service, the Fire Advisory Board and the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce.
During the forum presentations were made by persons from various areas, including insurance companies, the Fire Service and members of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce.
Speaking on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce was Liz Rahaman, who called on businesses to pay more attention to their safety measures. Alluding to figures so far for the year Rahaman said while there has been a decrease, there is much more to be done as it relates to safety measures.
She further called on businesses to make it their duty to ensure that their services are offered to the public with some level of comfort and at the same time safety. She noted that emphasis should be placed on storage of items in businesses as well an electrical installation.
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle alluded to the fact that there has been a decrease in the number of businesses that were destroyed by fire for this year as compared to last year. According to Gentle, for last year, 11 businesses were destroyed by fire. For the same period this year only five businesses have been destroyed.
He however noted that based on some of the fire inspection reports that he has seen, there are some areas that need urgent attention. Gentle pointed out that while businesses are focusing on the safety of their property they also need to pay attention to fire safety.
“What we find is businesses in our society are using a lot of grill work and shutters but little emphasis is placed on safety…like emergency exits and proper ventilation.”
He said that owners of businesses should also take into consideration the proper storage of their commodities. He further urged businesses to reconsider the safety measures that are currently in place.
In addition, he called on home owners who are preparing for the Christmas season to be careful in their preparation.
Meanwhile, statistics show that the Guyana Fire Service responded to 1148 fire calls already for this year as opposed to 1,497 for the same period last year. As a result of some of these fires 413 persons were left homeless as opposed to some 334 for the same period last year.
There have only been eight deaths by fire so far for this year as compared to 11 deaths by fire for the same period last year. For this year nine persons were injured as a result of fires while 11 were injured for the same period last year.
