Gizmos and Gadgets Georgetown Pitbulls, one of the pre-tournament favorites in the Carib/Pepsi t20 Big Smash competition, growled into action yesterday with back-to-back wins in the Demerara zone of the 11-team nation-wide event.
The City side easily disposed of Nauth’s Motor Spares East Coast Jaguars by nine wickets before beating Carib Food East Bank Pirates by eight wickets in the second game of the double header at Everest.
The East Coast Jaguars produced a toothless performance in sweltering heat and were restricted to 78-8 in 20 overs before the Pitbulls reached 79-1 in just 12.2 overs with National opener Trevon Griffith leading the fight with an unbeaten 46 from 38 balls with two fours and four sixes.
Leon Johnson, who joined Griffith at 55-1 in the 9th over when Shemroy Barrington fell to Rajendra Naikbarran for 13, finished unbeaten on 12.
Krishna Deosarran (29), Harrinarine Hera (12) and Rawle Fredericks (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures as Dion Ferrier (3-11) and Kellon Carmichael (2-19) were the most successful bowlers for the Georgetown unit.
The home team, without West Indies t20 Keeper Derwin Christian due to a finger injury sustained in the opening game, Georgetown raced to 78-2 in 9.3 overs replying to the 77-9 off 20 overs made an East Bank side which looked out of its league at this level.
Former Essequibo player Raul Khan offered some fight with 30 but Roopnarine Ramsundar (10) was the only other batsman to reach double figures for the East Bank Pirates.
Left-arm spinner Totaram Bishun, who resides on the East Bank, grabbed 3-13 with his left-arm unorthodox spin, while Carmichael was again impressive with the new ball by taking 2-9. Barrington did the wicketkeeping duties for the hosts.
Shivram Persaud removed Griffith in the first over at 0-1 and induced Barrington (16) to sky a catch to point in the 5th over at 28-2 before Johnson and Barnwell featured in an unfinished 50-run partnership to see them home.
Barnwell struck four fours and two sixes in his 17-ball 35 while Johnson’s 24 not out lasted 24 balls and included two fours as the pair warmed-up for their duties with the West Indies ‘A’ team.
The competition continues today on the Essequibo Coast when South Essequibo face Hotel Tower West Demerara Cavaliers from 09:00hrs and North Essequibo Smashers from 13:00hrs in a double header at the Anna Regina ground. (Sean Devers)
