Police have retrieved a suicide note left by 54-year-old Paul Mortimer which alleged that he killed his 33-year-old wife, Greta King-Mortimer, because she was unfaithful to him.
Mortimer, said to be a gold miner, shot his wife dead at Kaikan, Cuyuni/Mazaruni on Wednesday night with an unlicensed gun before turning the murder weapon on himself.
Kaieteur News understands that Greta King-Mortimer was shot in the stomach while her spouse was shot in the head.
Police said that a firearm was recovered at the scene.
The bodies were brought to Georgetown on Thursday.
Sources told this newspaper that the couple had known each other for 20 years. Mortimer worked as a miner in the Cuyuni backdam while his wife operated a shop.
However, there are reports that the couple was having domestic problems, which allegedly stemmed from a relationship between Mortimer’s wife and a soldier, who was seconded to Kaikan.
Kaieteur News understands that a villager had complained about the behaviour of some of the army ranks in the area.
According to a source, the soldier was recently transferred after someone took photographs of him in Greta King-Mortimer’s company.
In his suicide note, the miner reportedly stated that he loved his wife, and had never expected her to treat him in this manner.
Contacted yesterday, a female relative of Mortimer’s indicated that she was too distraught to comment.
A sister of the slain woman said that she was unaware of the circumstances surrounding her sibling’s death. However, the sister insisted that King-Mortimer was not a trouble-maker.
