– as OLPF distribution commences in Ancient County
The first phase of the distribution of 90,000 netbooks under the One Laptop Per Family (OLPF) initiative was rolled out in Berbice, Thursday, with the distribution of over 200 Haier Netbooks to single parents and low income families in Berbice.
The distribution in its first phase seeks to distribute 50,000 Netbooks to Guyanese. The first shipment of 5,000 is already in the country and it is expected that another 10,000 will arrive shortly.
At the simple handing over ceremony held at the Auchlyne Primary and Manchester Secondary Schools, residents from Letter Kenny, Auchlyne and Whim gathered where 164 and 80 computers were handed out at the respective locations.
Rupattie Motielall, 39, explained that this is the first time that she is the owner of a computer. “I feel happy to own a laptop. It will be a good help to my children especially the ones at school.”
Roseann Tyndall, 23, said that the project is an excellent one since she is unable to afford one. It will reduce the monies spent at internet cafes.
Regional Educational Officer, Shafiran Bhajan, in addressing the recipients, said that laptops will help tremendously in the education sector, as through the government’s ICT strategy that includes fiber optic cable and internet connectivity, recipients will be privileged to a wealth of information that will ultimately improve their quality and standards of living.
This will help connectivity with relatives and friends across the world, she said.
She further urged the recipients to take good care of the equipment and to share their knowledge with others.
As part of the initiative, recipients are required to do a compulsory 10 hours training and 30 hours community service. Several hubs are established across the region to cater for these training sessions.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
