Today is Mayor Hamilton Green’s 77th birthday, and the Inter Ward, Street and Village Knockout football tournament being staged in his honour has had to be rescheduled to start on November 24 by the Mayor’s Cup Committee.
Originally set to run from November 9 to 27, the event will now run from November 24 to December 8, the playing days being November 24, 26, December 4 and 8.
The venue remains the Georgetown Football Club Ground, Bourda. Unforeseen circumstances due to the venue being in use otherwise forced the rescheduling.
A total of 32 teams will compete in the tournament which will see games lasting 30 minutes. The no offside rule would be in effect in this tournament adding to the competitiveness and excitement of the tournament. A game ending in a stalemate after the 30 minutes will go straight to the sudden death penalty shootout mode.
A first prize of $200,000 is on offer for the winner, while the runner-up will carte off $100,000 along with trophies.
The opening round of action on Thursday, November 24 from 6:00pm will see Western Tigers B facing Diamond, Second Street Alexander Village oppose Timehri Panthers, Charlotte Street battle Kuru Kururu Lions, Broad Street face Grove, West Playfield play Castello Scheme, West Front Road tangle with Sandoval and Reggae Boys tackle Agricola.
The fixtures continue on Saturday, November 26 with Alexander Village versus Wales, Brave heart versus Lima Dam, Leopold Street against Goed Fortuin, Mocha face Stewartville, Alexander Street oppose Uitvlugt, Mojo’s Lions tangle with Laing Avenue, Western Tigers A take on Den Amstel and War Mongers collide with West Side All Stars.
The winners battle on December 4 with those eventual winners advancing to the quarters and eventual semis and final on December 8.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur and the Mayor’s Cup Committee are expressing birthday wishes to Mayor Hamilton Green on his special today.
Several sponsors have come forward to ensure the success of the tournament. Among them are Body Max Gym who donated the first prize, Guyanese International star Eddie Grant who put up the second prize, BK International, Chris Fernandes, New Thriving Restaurant, Sterling Products, Winston Rambarran, Nigel’s Super Market, Dr. Colin Watson, Crown Mining, Farfan and Mendes, James Bovell of the Business School and Clem Duncan Snr of Swansea.
