The last time these two countries clashed in a World Cup qualifying game was back in 1998 when the Twin Island Republic prevailed in the home and away tie by margins of 1-0 and 4-0 respectively.
But as the old adage goes, -‘Puppy does turn dog’- and this is exactly the case when one looks at Friday’s game between our ‘Golden Jaguars’ and T&T’s Soca Warriors. This current Guyana team, bolstered by the inclusion of a number of English based players including the Cort and Newton brothers, the former having played at the highest level in England, will be a force to reckon with. A number of players have also been playing their trade in the Pro League in T&T.
Already, heads have been turning and minds thinking given the fact that the ‘Golden Jaguars’ are leading the Group B standings in the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 ahead of the Soca Warriors with two games to go in this round of qualifying.
If the Twin Island Republic believe that they will walk over the Jaguars, they have got to think twice and better be prepared for what these ‘Golden Jaguars’ are about to unleash their way.
The last time these two countries faced off at this same venue the game ended 1-1. Barbados and Bermuda, which defeated the star studded T&T team, have both been beaten by the Jaguars, Barbados, twice and the Bermudians once, the other game ending 1-1 in Bermuda.
Under the direction of Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz the ‘Golden Jaguars’ have shown the aptitude and desire to take on the best in the Region and come out on top with the general belief that it is Guyana’s time to shine.
The level of commitment being shown by the team led by Captain Christopher Nurse has been heartwarming to see.
It’s been hard work by all involved and based on all reports, the road thus far has not been easy but the aim is common; that of achieving victory for Guyana which according to the philosophical Shabazz will break social, cultural and other barriers.
The call has been made for the 12th Man (The Fans) to wear yellow in support of this team. Shabazz also made a call for Guyanese World Wide to wear yellow on Friday and to send out positive vibes for the team.
The Guyana National Stadium, Providence must be packed to capacity on Friday evening, the attending crowd must be vociferous in their support, urging the team on every step of the way.
The Trini supporters will be in attendance with their drums and horns and we must be properly equipped to back our Jaguars and shut down their supporters.
The Tassa and African drummers, horn blowers must all be out in full force on Friday donned in their yellow garb to rally the ‘Golden Jaguars’ to an historical win which will see Guyana for the first time advancing to the 3rd round of World Cup qualifying.
The task is by no means impossible but the team needs the support of the vital 12th man.
All businesses must encourage their employees to wear yellow on Friday; the Government Ministries must also do the same as we rally around and support our Jaguars.
Children Under-12 will be admitted free with the admission fee set at $1,000 before, at the gate it will be $1,500. The locations where tickets are being sold are; Ashmin’s on Hadfield Street and the Kashif & Shanghai Office, Irving Street.
Kick off time on Friday is 20:00hrs with the T&T team expected to arrive in Guyana today.
