Several months after construction…
Many months have passed since Government constructed a multi-million dollar building that has been constructed at High and Princes Streets. Until now, officials have failed to find a suitable use for this structure.
The building, which now stands at the location where the old Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) headquarters was situated, was supposed to have housed the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
However, there was a change of plans to accommodate the Ministry of Health after a tragic fire destroyed the Ministry’s building a few years ago, but it was later reported to have been used to facilitate other government departments.
These plans never materialized and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) reportedly agreed, last September, to take control of the building and accommodate some of its departments. This plan, like the others, has not been executed.
According to a source, the GRA will no longer be utilizing this edifice, but will now be relocating some of its departments to the CLICO building located on Camp Street.
One businessman told Kaieteur News that the Tax Office was scheduled to move to the Princes and High Streets location, but because of a delay due to works being carried out on the structure, the date was pushed back to January this year.
The man continued to explain that since January, the building has been effectively abandoned, with no construction being carried out and no workmen even being seen on site.
With the new plans of shifting the GRA departments to the CLICO building on Camp Street, one is left to wonder about the fate of this structure.
