Leading Guyanese and Caribbean football referee Dianne Ferreira-James recently officiated at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara Mexico.
She refereed Mexico vs Chile, on the opening day, then Brazil vs Costa Rica. Her performance had been constant and paid off with her being appointed to officiate in the Final between Brazil and Canada. Three Mexican referees, Mayte Chavez and Rita Munoz as assistants and Lucila Venegas as 4th Official, assisted Ferreira-James.
Ferreira-James informed that this was a great start for her possible selection for London Olympics. With injury keeping her out of the Women’s World Cup, Germany, she adopted a different approach to training and injury prevention. She stated that she is in top physical condition, completing 12 laps a few weeks ago in the FIFA Fitness Test in Bahamas before her departure.
The injury was sustained at the Algarve Cup Portugal 2011. After her game in the Portugal China vs Denmark match she sustained the injury during a training session. It was diagnosed as a severe rapture and ligament damage, which left it swollen and blood was visible all around the affected area. She was on crutches for about a month, then another 3-4 weeks with therapy before she could jog again.
She is looking forward to a hectic schedule of 2012 with 3 FIFA Tournaments; FIFA U17, FIFA U20 and London Olympics to secure a spot to officiate.
