The fun and excitement experienced by players and supporters alike that have made the Guinness Greatest of the Streets football tournament an eagerly awaited event, will once again characterize the tournament when 32 teams from across the Country battle for honours when the Third Edition gets underway from Saturday November 5 to Friday December 9 next.
Matches would be played at 5 venues including Parade Ground in Middle Street, Independence Boulevard, East Ruimveldt Front Circle, Cultural Centre Tarmac and the National Park.
This much was disclosed when the organisers summoned the media to a specially convened meeting yesterday in the Thirst Park offices of the major sponsor, Banks DIH Ltd to unveil the tournament and clear up any issue of relevance to the smooth running of the tournament.
Sales and Marketing Executive (Banks DIH), Carlton Joao said that his company was extremely delighted to be an integral part of the tournament. He noted that the tournament had started as a small one but over the three years has grown tremendously. He further noted that the fever has transcended the border and organisers are currently engaged in discussions towards a similar tournament that involves the participation of other Caribbean countries. Negotiations are in the embryonic stages.
Mr. Joao further acknowledged the support received from a wide cross section of the society and disclosed that Banks DIH Ltd felt obliged to repay such support with corporate chivalry. “Guinness is growing from strength to strength and our involvement in the impending tournament is our small way of expressing our gratitude to the supporting public,” advocated the Sales and Marketing Executive.
Troy Mendonca is the coordinator of activities and he feels that the tournament has managed to provide valuable and productive activity for young footballers. “This is the only grassroots tournament that provides such excitement,” he said. Mr. Mendonca was also grateful for the corporate support rendered by Banks DIH Ltd.
He also noted that the tournament has developed to amazing proportions to the extent that many teams that were interested in competing were denied the opportunity after a full quota was had. However, the coordinator has assured that come next year the organisers will adopt a format that will witness the incorporation of more teams.
It was also disclosed that additional funds have been poured into the tournament but while these funds will not augment the top prize of half million dollars, it will broaden the scope of prizes on offer. The team finishing second will cart off $300,000 while the third place finisher win half that amount. The team occupying the fourth place slot will win One hundred thousand dollars.
Meanwhile, all participating teams received a football, compliments of the sponsor which was presented at the end of the briefing session by Guinness Brand Manager, Lee Baptiste.
The other members of the Banks DIH Ltd team present at the ceremony included Communications Manager, Troy Peters and Outdoor Events Manager, Mortimer Stewart.
