An attacking half century by opener Shimron Hetmyer guided Berbice to a 6 wicket victory over Essequibo at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground Friday in the Guyana Cricket Board U-17 50 overs 4-team cricket competition.
In a match which was reduced to 45 overs, Essequibo won the toss and elected to take first strike on a two paced track. They lost opener Mark Gonsalves (4) in the first over, caught at cover off pacer Nial Smith with the score on 5.
Sunil Persaud, who dumped Smith over long on for 6 off the very first ball he faced, was caught next ball off the same bowler leaving the score at 11-2.
National U-15 player Kemo Paul who made 24 (1×4) and Raj Parbattie (14) took the score to 60 before they were both run out in quick succession as the Berbicians fought back.
Devon George who scored an unbeaten 27 and Wazim Karoon 13 were the other batsmen that reached double figures as the home team who lost wickets at regular intervals ended on 122-9 off their allotted overs. Smith and off spinner Shiraz Ramcharan were the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with 2-32 and 2-17 off 6 and 9 overs respectively.
Berbice then started off their reply in blazing fashion as Hetmyer and Nick Ramsaroop added 56 for the opening stand before Ramsaroop was stumped off Ricardo Peters for 2. Berbice then lost Quacy McPherson (5) at 67 and Nicholas Cameron (14) with the score at 84.
Hetmyer who reached his 50 off 34 balls was next to go for 68 which contained eight sixes and five fours with the score on 116 before Arif Chan who ended unbeaten on 14 and Shilendra Shameer who was not out on 8 saw their team to safety as they finished on 125-4 in 26.3 overs. Peters, Deolall Persaud, Gonsalves and Keanu Harry picked up 1 wicket each for Essequibo. (Zaheer Mohamed)
