Guyana’s premier tertiary institution, the University of Guyana (UG), will host its Annual Inter-Faculty Track and
Field Competition today at the Base Camp Ayangana Ground, Thomas Lands where Health Sciences will be looking to defend their title.
Sports Officer at the University, Lavern Fraser-Thomas, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday afternoon that all the track and field events are slated to attract heated rivalries among the faculties. Fraser-Thomas believes that the day will be one of keen competition.
“We have all the events in the sport slated for our championships, and I expect some of the usual top performers and some new comers to go at loggerheads to decide who are the best University athletes in Guyana,” Thomas told this newspaper when contacted.
She said that for those students who are not into the more serious athletic events, there will be all the common novelty events for them. Those events include Lime-and Spoon, Sack Race and Tug O-War. There will also be the 100m Invitational Race, which Spicy Dish has sponsored, and the Digicel Relay Championships among the faculties.
Asked why the competition is not being held on the Campus as it was in the past, Thomas said it is one of the anomalies she intends to correct in the future. Thomas took over the University post from Sievewright Benjamin in August. Junior National Athlete, Alexis Williams is the defending female overall champion athlete at the championships.
