National scrabble champion, Abigail McDonald amassed 5 games and a positive spread of 642 and signaled her intentions to retain the national scrabble championships but it was Leon Belony with an impeccable 6 games and positive spread of 543 that captured the honours when action in the 2011 national scrabble championships commenced at the Bank of Guyana Sports Club, Avenue of the Republic, Sunday afternoon last.
McDonald conceded her third round game to veteran player, Ulric Harris (71) but secured victories over Wayne Cave (286), Orlando Michael (21), Ruby Cummings (143) and Grace Hercules (215). She also secured a bye in the second sitting.
Fortune favoured Belony when after being gifted a walk over against Keith Allicock, he earned a bye in the third sitting.
The astute player took full advantage and went on to chalk up four more wins against Moen Gafoor (102), Colin Chichester (139), Julian Skeete (152) and Nicholas Grant (150).
Several other players turned in credible performances and relative newcomer to the sport, Delon Mofatt must be highly commended after defeating several seasoned contenders among them Ruby Cummings (101), Grace Hercules (30) and Michael Benjamin (6). He also defeated Maurice Munro (150) and Prudence Edwards (8) but conceded a game to Orlando Michael (27). He finished the day on 5 games and a positive spread of 336. Ulric Harris also signaled his intentions with victories over Wayne Cave (48), McDonald (71), Orlando Michael (152) and Ruby Cummings (104). The old master also benefited from a 3rd round bye to finish the day on 5 games and a positive spread of 328.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players benefited from additional support yesterday when Marketing Manager of Giftland Office Max, Compton Babb and the proprietor of Akbar Auto Sales donated cheques of undisclosed sums towards the success of the tournament. Top seed, Moen Gafoor accepted the gifts on behalf of GASP and expressed profound gratitude to his benefactors. He further assured them that the gift is essential towards the efficient running of the tournament.
The players return tomorrow to contest the second round and once again a keen tussle is anticipated. McDonald is slated to play Gafoor in one of her games in what will be her toughest challenge, while Gafoor will be matched against William Woolford in the third sitting for the day. Harris and Gafoor will also match wits in the final game of the day.
The players would then convene on Sunday October 30 for the final day’s play. Thereafter, the top 2 finishers will compete in a best of 5 finals at a venue and date to be announced.
