Competition in the Karibee Rice sponsored senior football tournament organised by the Berbice Football Association (BFA) continued recently, Cougars United and Pistons United both won by exciting 3-2 margins over New Amsterdam United and Courtland United respectively.
Playing in the feature match of the night, Cougars, known as the knock-out kings of the Ancient County, had much to play for against tough opponents New Amsterdam United but were banking on their experienced leader, the veteran, former National goalkeeper Phillip ‘Pine’ Carrington. The game was billed as a mouth watering affair between two old rivals and as was the case when the two teams met in the first match, New Amsterdam United took the early lead with a goal from National Under-20 player Leonardo Adams eight minutes into the game.
The NA United boys tried their utmost to defend their slim lead but it was only a matter of time before Cougars came into their own and took charge of proceedings.
In the second half of the encounter, Cougars finally found their rhythm and a way past the defence of their rivals. Goals from Horace Roach (63), Jamal Joseph one minute later and Winston Benjamin in the 66th minute gave the Cougars more than the advantage, but the winning momentum against a game NA United unit as the final score read, Cougars 3 NA United 2.
The win by Cougars earned them a place in the semifinals and a date against National Super League 4th placed team Rosignol United. This match-up is set for October 30 at the Blairmont Estate Ground.
In the opening match of the evening, Pistons United, another New Amsterdam based side took care of business against Courtland United which hails from Fyrish in the Corentyne.
Courtland took the early lead with two goals from Sherwin Crandon in the 3rd and 7th minute, but that lead was short lived as Jarrel Rajgopaul in the 21st minute and Eon Farley four minutes later brought the scores level for Pistons.
It took Jarrel Rajgopaul’s 63rd minute effort, his second of the night to split the two teams and eventually earned a win for his side.
Piston’s Brain Simpson, Keel Noble, Paimon Edwards all received yellow cards with Adrian Busjit receiving two yellows which led to the tournament’s first dismissal.
Competition is set to continue today with one game at the Scottsburg Ground on the Corentyne. From 16:00hrs, Manchester United is set to face Corriverton Links.
