The October session of the Berbice Criminal Assizes open yesterday with a multi-coloured police parade in front of the High Court building on Esplanade Road New Amsterdam.
The event started over 45 minutes late due to the police not having enough personnel to take part in the ceremonial parade and march past. However when the contingent did arrive, to the surprise of many, some of the policemen were dressed in regular uniform whilst others were clad in ceremonial dress.
The salute was taken by Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire, who also inspected the Guard of Honour. Justice George-Wiltshire will preside over the Criminal sessions of the court. She was accompanied on the dais by Justice Franklyn Holder who is presiding over the civil court, Commander of ‘B’ division Assistant Commissioner Steve Merai and Cadet Officer C. Dufu . The Guard of Honour was a 20-man contingent lead by Assistant Superintendent of Police Keith Booker, Cadet Officer K. Griffith, Inspector William Henry and Sergeant Michael Newland. Also accompanying the parade was Superintendent Kevin Adonis.
27 cases are listed to be heard including 15 for murder, two for buggery, four for sexual penetration, three Carnal Knowledge, two cases of Robbery under Arms and one Break and Enter and Larceny.
Justice George-Wiltshire spoke of a few matters she had to deal with including some persons who had served as jurors less than two years ago and their names had reappeared, which she blamed on administrative problems.
Two persons who are on murder charges were present in court yesterday for trial, Wasim Baux and Chetram Nowrang called ‘Rice Truck’, however neither matter commenced, because neither of the accused had their lawyers present.
The first trial is expected to commence tomorrow when Nowrang is expected to have his day in court.
