Nicolette Fernandes dropped her semi-final game in the Individual Women’s event against Mexican, Samantha Theran and had to settle for a bronze medal when action in the XVI Pan American Games continued in Guadalajara, Mexico Monday last. Theran, the top seeded competitor at the games, defeated the local racquet wielder 3-0 and went on to eventually win the gold medal.
Chef de Mission Noel Adonis made these disclosures shortly after the tournament had ended. Medals were presented at a ceremony on completion of the day’s event
Meanwhile, the Guyana delegation touched down in Mexico on October 12 last and included the swimming team, the squash players and Taekwondo practitioners. Mr. Adonis related that the local team arrived in the Spanish country to a warm reception before attending the flag raising ceremony one day later and subsequently a spectacular display at the opening ceremony, under the auspices of the Games Organizing Committee on October 14th.
Several local officials attended that occasion including President of the Guyana Olympic Association, K.A Juman Yassin, that institution’s Secretary General, Ivor O’Brien and Assistant Secretary Treasurer, Hector Edwards. These officials also represented the GOA at the PASO Congress, held on October 12 in conjunction with the Games.
The Guyanese sports ambassadors commenced their medal hunt on Saturday 15 with local squash queen, Nicolette Fernandes taking to the Courts. She endeared herself to a small but appreciative gathering that seemed versed in the intricacies of the sport. “Fernandes did not disappoint and entertained the spectators with a brilliant display of strokes, coupled with her cool composure and control,” related the Chef de Mission. He said that Fernandes went on to win her first two matches against Argentine Antonella Falcione (11-6, 11-6, 11- 7) and Brazilian Thaisa Serafini (11-9, 11-9, 11-9) until the Teran loss.
Swimmers, Brittany van Lange and Niall Roberts, also commenced competition in the pool on Monday last but were unable to improve their times in the 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle events, respectively. van Lange was scheduled to compete in the 400m Freestyle yesterday while Niall will resume his quest for medals later in the week.
Heavyweight Taekwondo practitioner, David Rajjab was expected to be in action yesterday against Jamaican, Kenneth Edwards while the local Rugby team and officials along with the contingent of athletes were expected to arrive in Mexico to commence their quest for medals sometime yesterday.
