West Indies player Andre Fletcher hit seven fours and three sixes in 70 before an 82-run last wicket stand between left-arm spinners Garey Mathurin (43) and Denis George (32*) took the Windward Islands to 297 all out in 50 overs against the Leeward Islands at DCC in their final practice match before the Regional Super50 cricket competitions bowls off tomorrow in Guyana.
Johnson Charles (20) dominated a first wicket stand of 35 with Skipper Devon Smith (1), who became the first of five wickets for pacer Lionel Baker in a losing effort for the Leewards, who lost by 151 runs to follow up their six wicket defeat in the first practice game between the two sides at the same venue on Saturday.
Liam Sebastien made 33 before he was bowled by Peters after he had trapped Charles leg before and sent Hyron Shallow packing for a duck.
When Craig Emmanuel (1) was dismissed by spinner Jason Campbell the Windwards were in trouble at 137-7 on the small ground, but the lower order picked up the slack with sensible batting as Dalton Polius was run out for 40, Kevin James made 20 and Mathurin and George frustrated the Leewards with their last wicket stand before Baker removed Mathurin off the final ball of the innings.
Orlando Peters (2-64) and Campbell (2-47) supported Baker for the Leewards who were never in contention as only Montchin Hodge (26) and Steve Liburd (24) reached 20 in another disappointing batting performance for the defending joint champions.
Mathurin, who had 2-20, opened the bowling and removed Javier Liburd (17) and Austin Richards (13) in quick succession to leave the Leewards on 33-2 before George (4-22) and Polius (2-20) never allowed the middle or lower order to score freely as the Leewards sunk to 146 all out off 35 overs.
The Windwards play Guyana at Providence in their opening match in zone ‘A’ tomorrow while the Leewards, who tied with Barbados in last year’s final in Jamaica, battle Jamaica at Providence in their zone ‘B’ first round game on Thursday. (Sean Devers)
