Keith Daniels and Garvin Johnson appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry to answer the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It was alleged that the two men had conducted a drug business with police in a sting operation. The two men were said to have had in their possession 4kg 396g of cocaine which they gave to the police while conducting business.
The prosecution stated that police acting on information decided to conduct a sting operation where undercover ranks contacted the defendants under the pretext that they wanted to make a shipment from Guyana to Barbados.
The officers made arrangements with the men to have the shipment conducted. The police officers subsequently met with the alleged drug dealers on Croal Street in Georgetown where the men handed over the cocaine to the undercover law enforcers. They were arrested and charged for drug possession.
Daniels, who is said to be a 44-year-old businessman, and who resides at 140 Parshad Nagar, was represented by attorney at law Nigel Anthony, while 36-year-old Johnson who is an electrician residing at 152 Freeman Street, East La Penitence, was represented by attorney Peter Hugh.
Hugh in his client’s defense asked the court that if the men were apprehended since September, why was it that the men were only now being brought to the court?
The prosecution responded by telling the court that the lawyer’s comments were misleading since the initial attempt at arrest failed.
The prosecutor continued that while the ranks were in the process of proving that the contents received from the men were indeed the narcotics, the defendants had escaped. He further claimed that the men were apprehended only three days ago.
The men were then remanded by the court and they are required to return to the court on October 27.
