…says support for PPP/C no surprise
General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress, Lincoln Lewis, yesterday lambasted the entity’s former President Gillian Burton. The woman is openly supporting the People’s Progressive Party Civic, and she appeared at the Rally in Kitty on Sunday.
Lewis said that the former President is no longer a member of the Trades Union Umbrella Body or in the leadership of any of the union therein.
He said that her position on one of the Rights Commission for which she was put forward by the GTUC cannot be recalled by them but on the Tripartite Committee on Child Labour for which she was a representative that position has already been rescinded.
Lewis explained that Burton is also no longer President of the Postal and Telecommunications Workers Union. Her newfound platform will in no way harm the GTUC, he added.
He said that she is now employed with the One Laptop per Family Programme and that he is not surprised by her actions.
According to Lewis, in the last election campaign Burton was firmly on the People’s National Congress Reform’s platform behind Party Leader and then Presidential candidate Robert Corbin.
Lewis said, too, that when the late Winston Murray had challenged for the Leadership for the party Burton was there for Murray. He said that she subsequently jumped ship to the Carl Greenidge and later the David Granger camp.
“I am not surprised by her action…I know the lady.”
Lewis insists that her newfound position will not affect the GTUC.
